Livistona chinensis, the Chinese fan palm or fountain palm, is a species of subtropical palm tree of east Asia. It is native to southern Japan, Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, southeastern China and Hainan. In Japan, two notable populations occupy islands near the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, Aoshima and Tsuki Shima.
Plant Type: The hardy nature and lush look of the Chinese fan palm makes it a South Florida landscape favorite.
Sun Exposer: Full sun, Part shade
The wide-spreading crown, with drooping fan leaves that have a layered “weep,” will stay low to the ground while the palm is young.
This makes it a great privacy plant, an excellent container palm or a generously sized anchor for a tropical garden bed.
Ideal weight: Pretty at every stage of its growth, the Chinese fan will eventually grow a single trunk and rise to about 25 feet. It’s a slow grower for any light – best in sun to partial shade.
The Chinese fan is an attractive palm used in group planting or as a specimen plant. It has large fan-like leaves that droop down, it is a slow growing palm, taking 3-5 years to establish it self. It can grow to 15m in height having a single, naked trunk.
